The bombing became so bad that my mother and sister lived permanently with friends outside Wallasey, while my father and I stayed at Claremount Road. Finally, I was taken in by my uncle in Birkenhead (odd, because it was near Wallasey Docks, a bombing zone). It was Mr Allan, a Cambridge graduate from Emmanuel College, who first mooted the idea of entering for an examination for entry to his College. Such a thought would never have crossed anyone else’s mind, certainly not mine. If we aspired to go to university at all, it would have been to our local university, Liverpool.
The first sign that the War had caught up with Cambridge came straight away. No longer was there the prospect of three years of study. We had to join the Cambridge University Training Corps, which involved elementary infantry training on Saturday mornings, resulting in ‘Certificate A’, and a longer course in the summer vacation (I opted for the Royal Artillery) resulting in ‘Certificate B’. You also had to sign up for the Army proper (I took the King’s shilling on a fateful visit to Chester with my mother).
I went anyhow, and found only a dozen other people there from the whole university. ) Cambridge, then, was immensely disappointing as far as academic teaching was concerned. I had learned far more from my two English teachers at school. So we taught ourselves. I did very well, with an Upper Second rating in the exams in the summer exams of 1941, after only two terms. But, because of the War, it was a wildly exciting time to be ‘up’ at Cambridge. In my first few weeks, Tommy Beecham conducted the London Philharmonic in Delius’ Paris; then I saw my first operas, when Sadler’s Wells did La Bohème and The Magic Flute in one week.
