Coca Cola clothes became very popular in Europe but never really worked in the States, somehow. In 1991 Lynne Franks PR moved to even larger offices in west London’s Harrow Road. Originally an old car spray warehouse, the building was converted by designer Ben Kelly. We were the first offices in the media world in London to have a no-smoking ban; it was even publicised in Time Out. We had comfy sofas, flowers, a sound system and MTV in reception. When we first moved to Harrow Road I felt a strange energy from the police station next door so I got a little Burmese lady called Mrs Wong to come in and feng shui the building.
It was about being the best PR in London. Somehow I trapped myself in this role. I knew my business was a success and I just couldn’t stop working. Perhaps I got it from my parents, who worked extremely hard and always made sure I earned my allowance money. Even when I was very young I was only given it if I’d done all the chores expected of me, like making my own bed or clearing away the dishes. It certainly instilled the work ethic in me. By the time I was twelve I’d graduated to working in my dad’s butcher shop.
We bought our dream home in Maida Vale and spent a fortune decorating it. It was as if we were children being given unlimited access to a toy shop. We just spent and spent. We needed staff to keep this large house and our lifestyle going so we employed a chauffeur, a cook, a gardener and a housekeeper. I no longer went shopping for food myself, and if we had a dinner party I’d hire extra people to come in and do the cooking for me. Often we entertained key players from the worlds of politics and business, together with well-known show business personalities, but always we kept it informal and often ended up dancing around the dining table.
