This use would seem to be a deliberate fusion of analecta in its original sense with the term ‘annals’, meaning a narrative of historical events year by year, and was perhaps adopted by Fairfax because the form taken by his compilation combines elements of both meanings. anathema Originally meaning ‘an oVering to the gods’, the Greek term ‘anathema’ (plural: anathemata) came in various contexts to have more malevolent connotations. In medieval books, most notably in monastic libraries, an anathema was a curse or imprecation written into the book, usually by a librarian, calling down sorrows upon the head of anyone who stole it (as frequently happened, even in chained libraries).
